WSHU Public Radio Presents Sound in the Stars: First Night
A unique, immersive concert under the cosmos
FAIRFIELD, Conn. — What would Mozart’s music sound like beneath the same night sky he once looked upon?
WSHU Public Radio invites audiences to find out at “Sound in the Stars: First Night,” a one-of-a-kind planetarium concert on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the Sacred Heart University Discovery Science Center & Planetarium in Bridgeport.
This immersive evening will bring together live classical music, astronomy and visual storytelling, creating an experience designed to spark a sense of wonder and reveal unexpected connections between music and the night sky.
At the center of the experience is the acclaimed Vista Quartet, performing live inside the planetarium while a spectacular array of stars, planets and galaxies moves across the dome overhead. The program begins with a journey back in time to Vienna, where audiences will glimpse the night sky as Mozart might have seen it when he completed one of his evening serenades.
As the stars unfold above, the Vista Quartet will perform Mozart’s beloved “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” (“A Little Night Music”), transforming the familiar classic into an entirely new sensory experience. The program also includes music by Amy Beach and Hildegard of Bingen.
The concert will be presented by WSHU Music Host Emily Boyer, who will provide context and guide audiences through this shared experience of music, science and imagination. Custom visual design by Jacob Marcus will bring the celestial environment to life, creating a seamless interplay between the music and the cosmos.
"It’s about wonder and awe,” said Emily Boyer, WSHU morning music host. “At WSHU, we believe that classical music is a vibrant, evolving art form, and we are passionate about creating new ways for our community to experience it. We’re excited to bring live music together with the vast kaleidoscope of space for inspiring visual/immersive storytelling.”
Two performances will be offered on October 15, with a special themed reception between them. The intimate nature of the event makes it particularly exclusive: only 50 seats are available for each performance.
