Afterschool Arts Empowerment

Explore the connection of art and science!

Calling all curious minds and creative thinkers! Afterschool Arts Empowerment is for middle school students who are ready to experiment, explore, and make art in unexpected ways.

Each week, students will work with artist-in-residence Alicia Cobb to discover a fascinating science concept from color chemistry and optical illusions to microscopic worlds, symmetry, gravity, and motion. They will use what they learn to create original works of visual art. Students will paint, draw, experiment with materials, investigate how things work, and build a collection of artwork that brings science and creativity together.

Space is limited and students must apply to be considered for the program. Selected students must commit to attending all six sessions (10/7, 10/21, 10/28, 11/11, 11/18 & 12/2) as well as a final family showcase on December 13, where their work and discoveries will be celebrated and shared with the community. Student projects will be displayed in a special exhibition at Discovery in winter 2026.

No advanced art or science experience is required. Just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to try something new!
