@ Discovery: Mighty STEM Girls

msg-great-rocket-winnersThis fall Discovery Museum launched Mighty STEM Girls, a new program focused on engaging 4th grade girls in STEM. Sessions discuss female STEM pioneers, innovators, and visionaries, and then participants complete fun interactive activities related to the STEM pioneers discussed that day. The program has started as a partnership between the Museum and two Bridgeport Public Schools, and Mighty STEM Girls currently serves 20 students with after school programming, and invitations for their families to join them for special learning days at the Museum throughout the year.

msg-great-rocket-familiesIn early November, many of the participating girls and their families came to the Museum to take part in the Great Rocket Challenge. Working in teams, students and their family members worked together to build and then test launch rockets inside the Museum. Learning and completing this activity as a family required collaboration, communication, and gave the girls who are in our program an opportunity to show their families what they are doing after school.

Discovery Museum thanks Fairfield County’s Community Foundation’s Fund for Women and Girls and the Wells Fargo Foundation for their support of this program. With support from these two remarkable groups we were able to launch this new STEM learning program, and with donations and grants from individuals, companies, and foundations, we will grow this program and launch more like it in 2017!
