Year in Discovery – June 2016 Maker Math

@ Discovery: Maker Math

In June 2016, Discovery Museum used a grant from the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) to offer a series of hands-on lessons we called, “Maker Math” focused on applied measurement. Classes were offered to 2nd-4th grade students at Inter-District Discovery Magnet School. These dynamic lessons challenged students to measure, design, make, and test items of their own choosing to fit a small stuffed monkey. Using measurement to do something open-ended allowed for remarkable creativity.

• It’s Elementary: The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry announces the names of four newly discovered chemical elements, nihonium, moscovium, tennessine, and oganesson.
• Dirty Science: Dutch researchers announce that four crops (radishes, peas, rye, and tomatoes) grown in soil similar to that found on Mars are indeed safe to eat.
• Super Speedy Computing: A new Chinese supercomputer can process up to 93,000 trillion calculations (or 93 petaflops) per second.
• Stem Cell Possibilities: Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have found a new method for culturing adult stem cells.
